The Prince of Pinot
At the age of 19, August Kesseler took over the family business, founded in 1924 and then only 2.5 hectares in size. From a small family business that sold wine by the barrel, August turned it into one of the most successful wine producers in Rheingau, which today has a high international reputation. Today, they own a total of 32.5 hectares in some of the best locations in Rheingau, only Erste Lagen and Grosse Lagen; at Assmanhäuser Höllenberg, they grow Pinot Noir in lean slate soil, while Riesling stands in more clay-rich soils in Rüdesheim, Lorch, Hattenheim, and Erbach, among others. All vineyards have the characteristic steep slopes typical of quality-driven wines in the region.
They have a successful team with August Kesseler himself, winemaker Max Himstedt, oenologist and export manager Simon Batarseh, and viticulture manager Endre Kasa out in the vineyards. Many of August Kesseler’s wines have received fine awards over the years, such as “Winegrower of the Year,” “Producer of the Year,” and a series of high scores from Suckling, Jancis Robinson, and Wine Enthusiast.
