GERMANY
Dancing minerality. Salty provenance.
In Hohen-Sülzen, part of the Wonnegau area in southern Rheinhessen, Battenfeld-Spanier was founded by H.O. Spanier in 1993. Today, the house is run by Carolin and Oliver, dedicated to organic principles, and since 2003, the duo has also included biodynamic methods in production. Here, the soil is the focus, and the biodynamic diversity above and below the soil surface. The soil is the core of the production to produce typical wines for the area where terroir is the main ingredient. The best locations consist of massive limestone blocks that reflect life and character in the wine. Over the past 10 years, Battenfeld-Spanier has emerged as one of Germany’s best producers, something confirmed when they were named Winemaker of the Year by Vinum Wineguide in 2018.
